Main Facts:
Orlova Chuka Cave is one of the most impressive caves in northern Bulgaria. Located in the valley of the Cherni Lom River, the cave is famous for its large halls, unusual rock formations, and underground passages. Furthermore, its entrance sits about 40 metres above the river, creating beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
With more than 13 kilometres of explored galleries, Orlova Chuka is the second-longest cave in Bulgaria. However, visitors can only enter the developed tourist section. The accessible route includes about 3 kilometres of illuminated passages, although the guided tourist walk covers a much shorter section. As a result, you can enjoy the most interesting parts of the cave without needing specialist caving experience.
The cave was discovered in 1941 by a local shepherd. Later, work began to make it suitable for visitors, including the construction of stone steps and an artificial entrance. Consequently, Orlova Chuka became one of the most popular caves to visit in the region.
Inside Orlova Chuka Cave
Several impressive halls and formations can be seen along the tourist route. For example, the Concert Hall is known for its excellent natural acoustics. In addition, the Great Stalactite rises about 3.5 metres above the cave floor and is one of the most recognisable formations inside.
The route also passes through the Great Screes Hall, which is one of the largest chambers in the developed part of the cave. Meanwhile, stalactites, stalagmites, sinter formations, and other unusual shapes appear throughout the galleries. Therefore, the cave offers plenty of memorable sights during the guided visit.
Orlova Chuka is also an important habitat for bats. Furthermore, several species use the cave throughout the year, making it valuable for nature and wildlife conservation.
Historical Importance:
Orlova Chuka is important not only because of its size and natural beauty. Archaeologists have also found evidence of human activity inside the cave. In addition, remains of cave bears and other animals have been discovered, while traces of prehistoric human occupation have helped researchers understand the area’s early history.
The cave was formed over a very long period by underground water flowing through limestone and sandstone. As a result, its galleries and chambers developed into the impressive underground landscape visitors see today.
Furthermore, Orlova Chuka was officially declared a natural landmark in the twentieth century. Today, it remains one of the best-known natural attractions in the Rusenski Lom region and an excellent place to combine nature, geology, and history.
