Devin, Bulgaria – Spa Town in the Rhodopes

Location: Devin, Smolyan Province, Bulgaria
Type: Spa Town / Mountain Destination / Natural and Cultural Heritage

Main Facts:

Devin is one of the best-known spa towns in the Rhodope Mountains. Set at around 710 metres above sea level, the town is surrounded by forests, mountain valleys and clear rivers.

Its greatest attraction is its mineral water. Devin has thermal springs in and around the town, while nearby Beden Mineral Baths are famous for hotter water reaching around 76°C.

However, Devin offers much more than spa experiences. The surrounding area includes spectacular gorges, caves, waterfalls, forests and traditional Rhodope villages.

Because of this combination, Devin works well for travellers looking for both relaxation and outdoor adventures.

History of Devin:

People have lived in the Devin area since ancient times. Archaeological discoveries provide evidence of prehistoric settlement, while later finds show Thracian and Roman activity.

The local museum collection contains objects from the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages, as well as later Roman and medieval periods.

During the Middle Ages, settlements developed in the mountain valleys around Devin. The remains of the medieval Kaleto Fortress above the town are an important reminder of this period.

Over time, Devin developed into a regional centre. In the modern era, its mineral springs became increasingly important and helped establish the town as a spa destination.

Devin’s Mineral Springs:

Mineral water is central to Devin’s identity.

The town has a thermomineral water source with a temperature of around 42°C. Nearby Beden Mineral Baths provide another important thermal resource, with water reaching around 76°C.

Modern hotels and spa centres use the mineral waters for bathing, relaxation and wellness treatments.

The waters are also bottled and are among Bulgaria’s best-known mineral waters. Consequently, the name Devin has become closely associated with Bulgarian mineral water.

Kaleto Fortress:

Kaleto is a small historic fortress above Devin, also known locally as Kavurskoto Kale.

The remains stand on a rocky summit overlooking the town. The fortress is thought to date mainly from the 8th–10th centuries, although the area has a longer history.

The defensive walls are partly preserved, while the elevated location provides views over Devin and the surrounding mountains.

A short hiking route leads to the site, making it an interesting addition for visitors who want to see the historical side of Devin.

Devin Museum Collection:

The local museum collection preserves archaeological and ethnographic objects from Devin and the surrounding area.

Visitors can find prehistoric tools, pottery, jewellery and other archaeological discoveries alongside traditional Rhodope clothing, household objects and craft items.

Among the archaeological discoveries are objects from nearby caves, including Yagodina and Haramiyska Cave.

This small collection is particularly useful for understanding how people lived in the Rhodopes long before the modern spa town developed.

Church of St John of Rila:

The Church of St John of Rila is one of Devin’s main religious landmarks.

Located in the town centre, the church serves the local Orthodox community and adds another layer to Devin’s cultural heritage.

Its presence also reflects the strong connection between religion and community life in the Rhodope towns and villages.

Trigrad Gorge:

Trigrad Gorge is one of the most spectacular natural attractions near Devin.

The road towards Trigrad passes between dramatic limestone cliffs that rise hundreds of metres above the river valley.

The gorge is particularly impressive where the rock walls narrow around the road. Several hiking and sightseeing opportunities are available in the wider area.

Trigrad Gorge also provides access to Devil’s Throat Cave, one of the region’s best-known underground attractions.

Devil’s Throat Cave:

Devil’s Throat Cave lies around 17 km south of Devin near Trigrad.

A spectacular underground waterfall plunges into the cave, while the huge “Roaring Hall” creates an impressive natural setting.

The cave is also surrounded by legends connected with Orpheus and the underworld. Although these stories belong to local tradition rather than established history, they add to the atmosphere of the site.

Yagodina Cave:

Yagodina Cave is one of Bulgaria’s most famous show caves.

The cave extends for more than 8 km through the Rhodope limestone, although visitors follow a much shorter prepared route.

Inside, you can see stalactites, stalagmites and other formations developed over thousands of years.

Yagodina is located in Buynovsko Gorge, providing visitors with another spectacular mountain landscape outside the cave itself.

Beden Mineral Baths:

Beden Mineral Baths are around 12 km from Devin and provide another excellent opportunity to experience the region’s thermal waters.

The water is considerably hotter than the main Devin spring, reaching around 76°C at the source.

The baths are surrounded by mountain scenery and can be combined with a spa stay in Devin.

The municipality contains many additional natural attractions.

The Elephant is a distinctive rock formation near the town and resembles an elephant standing among the surrounding landscape.
