Location: Shumen, Shumen Province, Northeastern Bulgaria
Type: Ancient Fortress / Archaeological Reserve / Medieval Heritage
Main Facts:
Shumen Fortress is one of the most important historical sites in northeastern Bulgaria. Perched high on the Shumen Plateau, the fortress overlooks the surrounding landscape and the modern city of Shumen. Furthermore, its long history stretches across several thousand years, making it one of the region’s most fascinating archaeological sites.
The earliest settlement on the hill dates back to the Iron Age. Later, Thracians, Romans, Byzantines, and Bulgarians used and expanded the site. As a result, the fortress grew from an ancient settlement into a powerful medieval stronghold.
During the First and Second Bulgarian Empires, Shumen Fortress became an important military and administrative centre. In addition, its position near Pliska and Preslav placed it close to the political heart of medieval Bulgaria. Consequently, the fortress played an important role in protecting routes across northeastern Bulgaria.
A Walk Through Medieval Shumen
Visitors enter the archaeological reserve through the remains of the old fortress walls. Inside, you can see sections of defensive walls, towers, gates, streets, churches, and residential buildings. Moreover, the remains show how the settlement changed over many centuries.
One of the most interesting features is the reconstructed defensive tower, which gives a clear idea of the strength of the medieval fortifications. Meanwhile, archaeologists have uncovered several churches and other buildings within the fortress. These discoveries reveal how religious, military, and everyday life existed side by side.
The hilltop setting is another major attraction. From the fortress, visitors can enjoy wide views across Shumen and the surrounding countryside. Therefore, the site offers an excellent combination of history, archaeology, and scenery.
Historical Importance:
Shumen Fortress has played an important role in the history of the region since ancient times. More importantly, its location made it a valuable defensive position between the Danube region and the interior of Bulgaria.
During the First Bulgarian Empire, the fortress became closely connected with the nearby capitals of Pliska and Preslav. Furthermore, it continued to grow in importance during the Second Bulgarian Empire. At that time, Shumen was a large and prosperous settlement with strong fortifications.
The medieval town reached its peak before the Ottoman conquest at the end of the fourteenth century. Following the conquest, the fortress gradually lost its military importance. Nevertheless, the remains survived and were later uncovered through archaeological research.
Today, Shumen Fortress is one of Bulgaria’s most important archaeological reserves. Consequently, it provides a fascinating insight into the many civilisations that occupied this strategic hill over the centuries.
