Balabanov House – Plovdiv Old Town

Location: Plovdiv Old Town, Bulgaria
Type: Bulgarian Revival House / Historic House Museum / Cultural Heritage

Main Facts:

Balabanov House is one of the most recognisable historic houses in Plovdiv Old Town. It is a fine example of the symmetrical houses that became popular in the city during the Bulgarian Revival period.

The house was originally built at the beginning of the 19th century. It later belonged to several owners, including the wealthy merchant Luka Balabanov, whose name it still carries today.

Although the original building was demolished in 1935, it was reconstructed between 1976 and 1979 using detailed records and drawings made by architect Hristo Peev.

Today, Balabanov House combines historic architecture with cultural activities. It hosts exhibitions, concerts, literary events and other performances throughout the year.

History of Balabanov House:

The story of the house began with Hadji Panayot Lampsha, a wealthy Plovdiv merchant and member of the local tailors’ guild.

Later, the property changed hands several times. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was owned by Luka Balabanov, a successful timber merchant. His name eventually became attached to the house.

By the 1930s, the building had fallen into poor condition. Consequently, it was demolished in 1935.

However, its architectural importance was recognised, and reconstruction began decades later. Between 1976 and 1979, the house was rebuilt according to the surviving documentation of architect Hristo Peev, one of the leading researchers of Plovdiv’s Revival houses.

The reconstructed building follows the original design and preserves the appearance of an affluent 19th-century Plovdiv home.

Architectural Importance:

Balabanov House is a particularly impressive example of the symmetrical Plovdiv house.

The building has a carefully balanced composition, with a large upper-floor hall surrounded by rooms. Rich wooden decoration, carved ceilings and traditional alcoves add to its character.

The spacious design goes beyond a simple family residence. In fact, the scale and decorative quality give the house the appearance of a small urban palace.

Inside, visitors can see period-style furniture and architectural details that illustrate the lifestyle of wealthy Plovdiv families during the Bulgarian Revival.

Historical Importance:

Balabanov House is important because it represents both the architecture and urban culture of 19th-century Plovdiv.

During the Bulgarian Revival, Plovdiv became a prosperous centre of trade and craftsmanship. Wealthy merchants invested in large houses that reflected their status and cultural interests.

The house also shows how historic buildings can be preserved through careful reconstruction. Although the original structure no longer survives, the rebuilt house follows the documented design and continues to illustrate the character of the period.

Today, its role has expanded beyond heritage. The building is also an established cultural venue in the Old Town.
