Location: Plovdiv, Bulgaria
Type: Historic District / Creative Quarter / Cultural Area
Main Facts:
Kapana Creative District is one of the most colourful and lively areas in Plovdiv. It lies between the city centre and Plovdiv Old Town, making it easy to include in a walking tour.
The name “Kapana” means “The Trap”. It comes from the district’s network of narrow and winding streets, which once made the area feel like a maze.
For centuries, Kapana was known for crafts and trade. Skilled craftsmen had workshops here, and many streets were linked to different professions.
Today, the district has a new identity. Historic buildings stand alongside galleries, design studios, cafés, restaurants, bars and small independent shops.
Furthermore, colourful façades and street art give Kapana a modern character. As a result, the area has become one of the best places to experience contemporary Plovdiv.
History of Kapana:
Kapana developed as a commercial and craft district during the Ottoman period. Merchants and craftsmen settled here because of its location close to the main markets of the city.
Different streets became associated with particular trades. For example, goldsmiths, leather workers, tailors and metalworkers all had their own areas.
Over time, the neighbourhood became one of Plovdiv’s busiest commercial zones. However, changing economic conditions eventually led to a decline in traditional workshops.
During the late 20th century, parts of Kapana needed restoration and renewal. Later, the district became the focus of a major urban regeneration project.
In particular, efforts connected with Plovdiv’s European Capital of Culture programme helped transform Kapana into the creative quarter visitors see today.
Kapana Creative District:
Kapana is now one of the liveliest neighbourhoods in Plovdiv. Narrow streets are filled with independent businesses and cultural spaces.
During the day, visitors can browse art galleries, craft shops and design studios. Meanwhile, cafés and restaurants provide plenty of places to stop and enjoy the atmosphere.
In the evening, Kapana becomes even more active. Bars, restaurants and music venues attract both locals and visitors.
The district also hosts festivals, exhibitions, markets and other cultural events throughout the year. Therefore, every visit can offer a slightly different experience.
Historical Importance:
Although Kapana is now associated with modern culture, its historic identity remains important.
The neighbourhood shows how Plovdiv has changed over the centuries. Traditional craft streets have evolved into creative spaces, while many older buildings still preserve the character of the historic district.
At the same time, Kapana demonstrates how a historic neighbourhood can be adapted for modern city life without losing its connection to the past.
Its location is another important advantage. Kapana stands close to many major attractions in central Plovdiv, including the Old Town, Roman Stadium and Dzhumaya Mosque.

Quick Travel Information:
Kapana Creative District is located in the centre of Plovdiv, close to the Old Town and the main pedestrian shopping streets.
Plovdiv is approximately 210 km south of Veliko Tarnovo, with a driving time of around 2 hours and 45 minutes. Therefore, Kapana can easily form part of a full-day trip from Veliko Tarnovo.
The district is compact and best explored on foot. Most streets are easy to walk, although comfortable shoes are recommended because some areas have uneven paving.
Parking directly inside Kapana can be difficult. Instead, visitors can use parking areas around the central district and continue on foot.
Allow around 1–2 hours to explore Kapana itself. However, because the Old Town and Roman landmarks are nearby, most visitors combine the district with a wider Plovdiv sightseeing tour.
For travellers joining a guided tour from Veliko Tarnovo, Kapana is a particularly good addition because it shows a more modern and creative side of Plovdiv alongside the city’s ancient heritage.
