Main Facts:

Kaleto Historical Park is one of the newest cultural attractions in Svishtov. Located on a hill above the town, the site combines the remains of an old fortress with a modern park and visitor facilities. Furthermore, the area offers excellent views towards the Danube River.

The hill has a long history of settlement and defence. Archaeological evidence points to activity in the area as early as the Iron Age. Later, Roman fortifications were built here, while the medieval fortress became an important stronghold during the Second Bulgarian Empire.

The fortress is also known by the medieval name Zishtova. Over time, it was used and rebuilt by different rulers. As a result, the archaeological area contains remains from Roman, medieval, and Ottoman periods.

A New Attraction in Svishtov

Kaleto Historical Park reopened after a major restoration project on 1 May 2026. Consequently, the site is now much easier and more enjoyable to visit.

The new Interactive Centre Kaleto includes a museum exhibition, a detailed 3D model of the medieval fortress, and a virtual reality experience. In addition, visitors can enjoy a viewing platform with wide views across Svishtov and the Danube.

A new open-air amphitheatre has also been added to the park. Therefore, the site can now host concerts, cultural events, and other public performances. Moreover, landscaped areas provide space for walking and relaxing.

The restored Church of St Dimitar is another important part of the site. Nearby, visitors can also see archaeological remains and parts of the old fortress walls. Consequently, Kaleto offers a combination of history, culture, technology, and outdoor recreation.

Historical Importance:

Kaleto has played an important role in the history of Svishtov for many centuries. More importantly, the fortress helped protect the settlement and the important Danube routes in the region.

During the Second Bulgarian Empire, the medieval fortress became part of the Bulgarian defensive system. Furthermore, its position on the hill gave defenders a strong advantage and allowed them to watch the surrounding area.

Later, the Ottomans reused the fortress. During the centuries that followed, the site was rebuilt and changed several times. Historical traditions also connect Kaleto with Vlad the Impaler, known as Dracula, who is believed to have stayed at the fortress in the fifteenth century.

Archaeological excavations carried out in recent years have revealed valuable remains and artefacts from different periods. As a result, researchers have gained a better understanding of the development of Svishtov and its medieval fortress.

Today, Kaleto Historical Park protects this important heritage while presenting it in a modern way. Therefore, it is one of the most interesting places to visit in Svishtov.
