Type: Orthodox Cathedral / Bulgarian National Revival / Cultural Landmark
Main Facts:
The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is one of Svishtov’s most impressive landmarks and one of the finest examples of Bulgarian National Revival church architecture. Located in the heart of the town, the cathedral dominates the skyline with its elegant proportions and impressive bell tower. Furthermore, it is regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of the renowned Bulgarian master builder Kolyo Ficheto.
Construction of the cathedral began on 4 April 1865 and was completed just 30 months later. As a result, the church was officially consecrated on 15 October 1867. Although financial difficulties delayed the completion of the bell tower, master builder Gencho Novakov finished it almost twenty years later. In addition, the cathedral’s six bells were donated by Russian Emperor Alexander II after Bulgaria’s Liberation.
A Masterpiece by Kolyo Ficheto
The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is admired for its elegant architecture and remarkable craftsmanship. One of its most unusual features is the pair of rotating stone columns at the main entrance, designed to demonstrate the exceptional engineering skills of Kolyo Ficheto. Meanwhile, the beautifully carved wooden iconostasis was created by master craftsman Anton Geshov Stanishev, while the magnificent icons were painted by the celebrated Svishtov artist Nikolay Pavlovich. Consequently, the cathedral combines outstanding architecture with exceptional religious art.
During the devastating Vrancea earthquake of 1977, the cathedral suffered serious structural damage. Nevertheless, extensive restoration work preserved the building for future generations. Today, visitors can admire one of Bulgaria’s most beautiful Revival churches while experiencing an important symbol of Svishtov’s history and spiritual heritage.
Whether you appreciate architecture, history, or Orthodox heritage, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is one of the highlights of any visit to Svishtov.
