Location: Old Town, Plovdiv, Plovdiv Province, Southern Bulgaria
Type: Ethnographic Museum / Bulgarian National Revival / Cultural Heritage
Main Facts:
The Regional Ethnographic Museum is one of Plovdiv’s most beautiful cultural attractions and the second-largest specialised ethnographic museum in Bulgaria. Located in the heart of the Old Town, the museum occupies the magnificent Kuyumdzhiev House, one of the finest examples of Bulgarian National Revival architecture. Furthermore, its elegant façade, richly decorated interior, and peaceful courtyard make the building an attraction in its own right.
Built in 1847 by the renowned master builder Hadzhi Georgi for the wealthy merchant Argir Kuyumdzhiev, the house immediately impresses visitors with its symmetrical design, beautifully carved wooden ceilings, colourful wall paintings, and more than 130 windows. As a result, it is widely recognised as one of the masterpieces of Bulgarian Revival architecture. Later, the building became home to the Regional Ethnographic Museum, where it continues to preserve the traditions and culture of southern Bulgaria.
A Journey Through Bulgarian Traditions
Inside the museum, visitors can discover thousands of artefacts that illustrate everyday life in the Plovdiv region, the Rhodope Mountains, and Sredna Gora during the Bulgarian National Revival. For example, the exhibitions include traditional costumes, jewellery, pottery, copperware, musical instruments, furniture, textiles, and beautifully crafted household items. In addition, several reconstructed rooms show how Bulgarian families once lived, worked, and celebrated important occasions.
Meanwhile, temporary exhibitions and demonstrations of traditional crafts regularly bring the museum to life. Consequently, every visit offers something new to discover. Whether you are interested in folklore, architecture, or Bulgarian traditions, the museum provides an engaging experience for visitors of all ages.
Historical Importance:
The Regional Ethnographic Museum was established in 1917 to preserve the traditional culture and customs of southern Bulgaria. More importantly, it now protects one of the country’s richest ethnographic collections, containing more than 60,000 artefacts related to everyday life, crafts, clothing, agriculture, music, and local traditions.
Since 1938, the museum has been housed in the Kuyumdzhiev House, allowing visitors to admire both the remarkable collection and one of Bulgaria’s finest Revival homes. Furthermore, the building itself reflects the wealth and lifestyle of Plovdiv’s prosperous merchants during the nineteenth century. As a result, visitors gain a deeper understanding of both the architecture and the culture of the Bulgarian National Revival.
Today, the museum continues to organise temporary exhibitions, educational programmes, folklore events, and demonstrations of traditional crafts. Therefore, it remains one of Bulgaria’s leading centres for preserving and promoting the country’s cultural heritage.
