Main Facts:
The wealthy merchant Hadji Hristo Daskalov commissioned the house between 1804 and 1808 for his two sons. Today, it stands as a masterpiece of Bulgarian National Revival architecture. However, the house is best known for the legendary competition between master woodcarver Dimitar Oshanetsa and his apprentice Ivan Bochukovetsa. As a result, each craftsman created a magnificent carved wooden ceiling known as the May Sun and the July Sun, which remain among the finest examples of Bulgarian woodcarving.
The museum also celebrates the history of the famous Tryavna Art School. Furthermore, visitors can admire beautifully carved iconostases, traditional church furnishings, original woodworking tools, and sculptures that generations of skilled craftsmen created. In addition, informative exhibitions explain how the art of woodcarving developed from simple shepherd’s carvings into the magnificent church decorations for which Tryavna became famous.
